The Vrajavasi Doctor
This morning a doctor came from a long distance and at great inconvenience to see me. After the examination he prescribed some medicine. When I looked for some rupees to pay him, to my great embarrassment I could not find any. Suddenly, at the same moment, we both noticed two sweet balls of maha prasadam from Radha Govinda in Jaipur on my desk. A devotee had brought the prasadam to me the night before. I spontaneously picked up the two golden-colored lugloo’s and humbly offered them to the doctor. He smiled broadly, touched the prasadam to his head and ate one with great respect.
“The other I will give to my wife,” he said with appreciation. With that, he turned and left.
As I watched him walk back down the road I thought, “This is the beauty of Vrindavan: That a doctor is more satisfied with Krsna’s mercy than a payment of laksmi. ”
Srila Prabhupada writes:
“Maha Prasadam is nondifferent from Krsna. Therefore, instead of eating maha-prasadam, one should honor it … when taking maha-prasadam, one should not consider the food ordinary preparations. Prasada means favor. One should consider maha-prasadam a favor of Krsna … Krsna is very kind. In this material world we are all very much attached to tasting various types of food. Therefore, Krsna eats many nice varieties of food and offers the food back to the devotees, so that not only are one’s demands for various tastes satisfied, but by eating prasadam one makes advancement in spiritual life. Therefore, we should never consider ordinary food on an equal level with maha-prasadam.”
